Recently we have decided to obtain Spanish Driving Licences. After a long wait (several months), the Gestoria in Galera e-mailed us to say that we had to get another piece of paper! To cut a very long story short; after a brief chat with a friend, he advised that he had just phoned the DVLA and given his Spanish address. His family live here full time and run various businesses and own Spanish vehicles.
On phoning the DVLA that same week (end of May 2010) they advised us that yes, even though we didn't own a property in the UK or have any ties there now, all we had to do was let them know we were in Spain! Whether they made a physical note of this or not, is another matter. They did not ask for our address.
We did query the point that surely our old address being on the licence was wrong, especially as it is clearly written on the back of the paper part of the licence, that any change of address has to be notified.
They just said that when the licence is up for renewal, then we would have to get Spanish licences!
We are still going to proceed with getting Spanish Driving Licences, but wanted to share this information, incase it is useful. The price per person as of May 2010 is 90€.
The medical cost 45€ per person - we did ours in Baza (open Monday - Friday) on the 3rd February 2010 - it took around half an hour including registration and final paperwork. It can also be done in Huescar on Monday evenings.

AUTO ELECTRICIAN/VEHICLE AIR CONDITIONING
Today we have had our vehicle's air conditioning unit re-charged with gas (ready for the summer) in Huescar. Antonio Martinez Gomez is a great young man, listens and also advises. He specialises in Auto Electrics and has a great range of Stereos and Speakers, but has all the necessary equipment to re-charge your vehicles air-con unit and work on any other electrical item in your vehicle. It took around an hour and cost 50€ because ours was completely run down, but prices start from 40€ for a 30 min re-gas.
If you don't speak Spanish and need Antonio's help, we are happy to meet you nearby, take you there and translate for 5€.
